Bromance is hard to find
I'll give this book bonus points for being about male friendship and having no romance. The writing itself felt flat and would have preferred more slice-of-life bromance. It felt like it was written for a class reading list in a "let's have this happen so the teacher can discuss it," sort of manner. It seemed like any scene of friendship that wouldn't include gay derision or toxic masculinity got sped through and I would have definitely preferred more casual scenes. It also doesn't help that I'm not into fandom enthusiasm or usage of superlative descriptions.

Witty dialogue between 6th grade best friends Matt and Eric makes this story about self-proclaimed band geeks really a fun read. The ending seemed rushed and very contrived but the love these two boys have for each other is really the heart of the story.

There's not a lot of book about male friendship in pre-teen o early teen years. This is a good story, entertaining and poignant.
There's adventure but there's also insight and reflections.
I liked this story and it's recommended.

Very sweet book, great role models for male friendship. Pacing of the climax was jolting with how great the rest of the book was.

This book was just fine for me. I really enjoyed the story, but there was a lot of extra stuff that was put into the story that make some parts feel inauthentic. I loved the characters though and the things that they were working towards.

Such a fun, adventurous story for young people with fiercely honest dialogue and a wonderful blueprint for standing up for oneself. A testament to friendship and feelings. I loved it.

This is a heartfelt story about sixth grade best friends who decide to plan the most epic hooky ever as a last hurrah before one of the boys moves across the country with his family at the end of the school year. Along the way they face bullies, read comics, and deal with toxic masculinity and racism. Hand to fans of Jordan Sonnenblick or John David Anderson.
