Kim Stanley Robinson tratta questa trilogia come un grande esperimento in cui studiare la società umana, dalla sua struttura politica a quella economica, il tutto con sullo sfondo tanta, tanta scienza.
Su Marte, in un futuro vicinissimo, seguiamo i primi coloni (tutti scienziati), il loro arrivo sul pianeta e i primi sforzi per capirlo. Presto, l'idea della terraformazione prende piede e i poteri economici iniziano ad interessarsi al pianeta rosso. La costruzione di una società alternativa è quindi l'interesse dell'autore, una nuova società anticapitalista e in cui gli scienziati abbiano un ruolo politico prominente.
La scienza, ossessione/religione di tutti i protagonisti, è spiegata nei minimi dettagli, in tutte le discipline toccate. Questo può forse respingere alcuni lettori, che potrebbero trovare il libro pedante, noioso, pieno di info-dumping, criptico nella sua utilizzazione del gergo scientifico. E lo è, sotto certi aspetti: Robinson non scrive per essere accessibile a tutti e non si vergogna di quello che conosce. Però è bellissimo comunque, anche quando non si capisce perfettamente le parti relative alla scienza perchè in fondo Kim Stanley è un ritrattista di caratteri, un umanista, ed è bravissimo nel descrivere dinamiche relazionali e punti di vista diversi sugli stessi eventi.
In sostanza: bellissimo, ambizioso, complesso. Capolavoro? Secondo me sì.
