A brilliant conclusion to one of the best fantasy trilogies I have read. While not quite as engaging as the first two books, the third is a satisfying conclusion that incorporates complex moral issues and addresses warfare in a way few fantasy books do well. The world Chakraborty builds is lush and worth exploring. Highly recommend.

i never thought i could be so satisfied with the fates of every character in a series but i genuinely loved how things wrapped up. it's been such a fantastic journey following the growth of nahri, dara, and ali.

i felt that dara's ending in particular really suited him. throughout the three books he gradually comes to understand what he's been put through by the people he's given everything to and by the end, he truly takes accountability for what he's done by dedicating his existence to making penance. it was something you could sense him moving towards the entire time and i'm so glad that SAC nailed it with his outcome.

i'd never been into nahri and dara's "romance" and i think it was obvious they never would have ended up together but that didn't make their farewell scene any less emotional. i WAS, however, always rooting for nahri and ali and i adored how their friendship and romance grew in this book. they overcame so much at each others' sides and they deserve to be happy together(!!)

ngl some of nahri's parts by the end felt kind of "umm okay" with the whole peri thing and the "that egyptian shafit cook is actually your grandfather!" thing but whatever!! u go girl

i've also been a huge fan of jamshid and it was so nice to see him grow even closer with nahri and get his happy ending with muntadhir.

In The Empire of Gold, a vengeful leader has taken the djinn city of Daevabad, which a healer has escaped with the ring that is holding the world's magic and with a djinn prince whose water magic is becoming dangerous. The world building in this sequel is massive, each facet having its own backstory while still connected to the main storyline. Characters all shine as they face their challenges head on--magic, politics and resistance, and relationship dynamics. The world is so complex that it's unclear how the characters will attain their goals, but the story has a good resolution, addressing all aspects of the plot.
