”Loneliness will sit over our roofs with brooding wings.”
have a seat and a cup of hot chocate folks because we are going on a trip to disappointment island for the 4th or 5th time this year (I am way too lazy to check).
Top 10 reasons why Dracula deserves its 1-star rating, and that tiny star taken from the clothesline
1. Count Dracula, the main character, appears for around 60-70 pages AND THAT'S ONLY IN THE FIRST HUNDRED. after that we only barely hear of him until the very LAST HUNDRED OF PAGES.
2. the vampiric atmosphere is minimal to non-existent. okay, dracula's wives sucked jonathan's blood and ate a baby alive. and around 300 pages later he bursts out of stardust and lets Mina drink his blood. anything else? no? that's it? disappointment styled in capital letters.
3. the story is told through the diaries of the main characters: Jonathan, Mina, Dr. Seward, Lucy (until she dies) and occasionally – although rarely – Abraham Van Helsing. I WANT TO SAY THAT THESE PEOPLE BORE ME TO DEATH. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING INTERESTING. I mean sure maybe two centuries ago it was fun to contemplate your thoughts and experiences in a diary and keel track of things but MEIN GOTT READING THESE PEOPLE'S THOUGHTS WAS PURE TORTURE.
4. the only interesting part where I found myself intrigued was lucy's disease aka vampirism but that too was written a bit weak and the case of a madman from Dr. Seward's asylum, Renfield, who met Dracula before Jonathan and the Count promised him immortality but Renfield went a bit crazy and is in a mental institution now. that caught my attention for a tiny portion of the book yet I got bored after 60 or so pages.
5. THE WHOLE WORLD WAS OVER THE MOON LUCY. ABRAHAM VAN HELSING, DR. SEWARD AND ANOTHER MASCULINE FELLOW ONE WHOSE NAME I CAN NOT REMEMBER (as you can see this book was very interesting and captivating)
6. I lost track of how many times I wanted to DNF.
7. I could not suffer any character in this novel. absolutely none. Van Helsing is the only one I tolerate. Mina, for some reason, I can't fall in love with her like I fell in love with the version played by Winona. Jonathan is lame. He's lame and dull as a piece of white paper. the rest of the cast is simply donut filler for me.
8. did I mention the huge lack of vampires in this book?
9. I refuse to believe the Count has short hair I'M SORRY I FELL IN LOVE WITH GARY OLDMAN'S PORTRAYEL BEFORE I DEEP DIVED INTO THE NOVEL AND THERE'S NO GOING BACK.
10. the movie is gorgeous, it's a masterpiece and my math teacher's self-published textbook is more interesting and has more personality than THIS WASTE OF INK AND PAPER.
what a shame that another one of my most anticipated reads ended up in this category.

It is so beautifully written. I wish friendships were as they were back then. 4.5 just because it was awfully long. And not like Dickens-long. It was kinda like going down a long, long spiral staircase with Bram Stoker here. Very true to the OG gothic reputation. Loved Wilhelmina and Van Helsing. Underwhelming ending.
