i’ll have to reread this in the future at some point. it was a bit of a tough read for me, hard to stick with it. i think i might appreciate it more at a later date.

Ich weiß, dass dies ein sehr bekannter und beliebter Klassiker ist. Warum habe ich ihn dann nicht zu Ende gelesen? Der Hauptgrund ist, dass Heathcliff sich in eine wirklich unsympathische Person verwandelt - wobei es dafür eine Begründung gibt, denn "seine" Catherine und das Leben sind nicht gut zu ihm. Man könnte allerdings argumentieren, dass es ist immer noch seine freie Entscheidung, sich so zu verhalten, wie er es dann tut.
Gut, das hier ist ein Drama und da müssen auch Hauptfiguren nicht zwingend sympathisch sein, aber teilweise wirkte das Drama auf mich etwas konstruiert, quasi, um noch stärker zu eskalieren.
Hinzu kam dann noch dass in der deutschen Übersetzung mehrfach das Z-Wort auftaucht, mindestens einmal das N-Wort und man könnte auch von Rassismus sprechen. Zumindest wird Heathcliff wie eine Person of Color beschrieben und von mehreren weißen Personen sehr schlecht behandelt, über Jahre hinweg.
Und was die Liebe zwischen ihm und Catherine betrifft, die wirkt auf mich eher toxisch. Zwar sind sie eine Zeitlang unzertrennlich, aber dann geht das Ganze bald den Bach runter. Also wer hier eine romantische Lovestory erwartet, der sollte sich lieber nach anderen Büchern umsehen.
Ich habe mir, statt weiterzulesen, eine Inhaltsangabe des Romans im Internet durchgelesen und von daher weiß ich, dass die Handlung später noch viel stärker eskaliert. Aber nein danke, ohne mich.

man 😭 a classic story of intense love that leads to destruction for everyone involved omg Catherine and Heathcliff were both insufferable tbh but maybe that’s why they were so obsessed with each other? v messy, but i also loved how the Cathy and Hareton’s story was a reversal of their parents’ and showed the possibility of undoing generational pain nd trauma!
