Once again, I couldn't engage/connect to Phury or Cormia... I've started this book 2 before and never got past the first few chapters because it was simply boring. And as I read I found myself skipping a lot of passages, generally not being interested in what was going on.
This was definitely one of my favorites. I laughed and I cried, literally. Phury's story was deep and definitely not what I expected. I could really get in touch with his character and the constant internal battle he was facing. The twists and turns in the plot left me guessing right until the end. Very well written, she delivers again!!
I read this book years ago and forgot to add it to my read bookshelf so I've begun the whole series over again.
A necessary evil as far as I'm concerned about reading this book. If you want to read the whole series in order and figure out why somethings have changed in Rhev's book around the BDB house you'd have to read this one. I loved Phury and Cormia and both of them together but a few things bothered me about the story.
1. It took forever for Phury to come around to Cormia even though she was CLEARLY interested and had said so multiple times.
2. Phury's "wizard" has basically been a constant voice in his head since he set out to save Zsadist and yet it hasn't come up in passing once since the series started? That's a whole lot of weird honestly and felt kinda thrown on to cause issues.
3. Zsadist SHITS on Phury for his suicidal attitude and the fact that he's scared to death for him even after he spent hundreds of years doing the same fucking thing by only feeding off humans and having his brother beat the shit out of him. Like fuck you Zsadist but this hypocrisy never comes up all Phury says is "You never thanked me for saving you" and that starts a whole argument about how Zsadist never asked Phury to save him and like Zsadist didn't fair but like he's also being a huge hypocrite Phury call him on it dammit.
Things I like?
1. The wrap up solution to the problem at the end made sense made ABSOLUTE sense because of all the shit that had been said through out the book god bless no Deus Ex here folks.

This book was a little rough for me because it actually made me dislike Phury which I’m honestly not sure was the intent. The rest of the plot lines really carried this book for me. I could have skipped all the Phury Primale drama for everything else that happened. Zsadist says it best:
“For fuck’s sake, get off the cross. Someone else needs the wood.”

This honestly surprised me when the book started with almost a several month flash-forward where Cormia is already into Phury while Phury is still focused on Bella and himself. He was so annoying in this book, and I feel like his character actually regressed overall. I will say that I actually really liked the addiction plotline even if that was part of the reason he was annoying. I think that was really well written. I’m honestly not sure what my feelings are on the wizard. I think it is an interesting way to put Phury’s grief and guilt into words.
I just want John Matthew to be happy!! That is all I want!!!! Why can’t John just be happy?!?!? I am not patiently waiting for John’s book because he’s been so pivotal and heavily covered in almost all of the series so far.
Qhuinn also has an interesting backstory. I felt really “meh” about him from previous books, but the connection to his character was built up so much in this book.
I kind of love Lassiter. I want more of him, PLEASE!
The deep and extreme hatred I have for Lash knows no bounds.
My jaw almost unhinged from it dropping so hard after Rehvenge threatened the human in Chapter 5. That is some of the craziest behavior I’ve read in a WHILE. AND Rehvenge is doing it for a good reason. I honestly was on the fence on how I’ve felt about him so far, but I think I’m ending up really liking his character a lot. He seems like he has a lot to unpack, so I’m glad his book is next. His book is coming at a great time when the world politics of the glymera seem to be mattering more. The world is definitely expanding further which will be interesting to see.
I love how J.R. Ward seems to have a pattern in how she tells stories by having characters build relationships with another character who has a similar struggle or background. Like Cormia and John mirroring each other in their struggles to fit in and communicate with others. I think it is really beautifully done and there are examples of this across almost all of the books so far. It just really builds the connections between characters and adds so much realism to the story.
I’m so happy that Tohrment is FINALLY back in this book. It’s been so long and 100% overdue.
So this one was a bit more difficult for me to get into but once I did I couldn't put it down. Phury had some big issues but I'm more excited to read about everything else that's going to happen.
Phury got his head stuck up his ass and did some really dumb stuff even worried Z so much that he wanted to wash his hands of him (should of been the wake up call he needed except not)... Cormia tried very much to be strong for the race, tried to be what they wanted her fo be for the sake of the race. But feeling like she was just thrown to the side will of course make her feel as though she is not of worth (when of course she is)... they finally fight the biggest part of their problems together and figure out they are meant to be so of course they are HEA... Now on to the in between story of Z, Bella and Nalla
Feel like it took me forever to read this book. It was not as exciting as the other books. Sorry Phury but your book was quite boring and that's why it took me so long to get the through it.

I didn't enjoy this book as much as the others in the series so far. I think a lot of that had to do with I just didn't feel connected to Phury and Cormia. I felt that Phury's problems just went on and on. Their story seemed to resolve too quickly.
I really enjoyed learning more about John, Qhuinn & Blay.
