Based on true events, this book focused on the cruelties that were experienced by kids from the nuns and the priests that were tasked with caring for them in orphanages. The MC in this book came to this town as a ghostwriter for a true crime novel about this specific orphanage, Coram House, and the crimes committed there. I was sucked into the story and read this book in one day, but I was continuously frustrated by the inevitable poor decision making and the ubiquitous drinking that seems to be the norm for female MCs in these stories. Why??

I found the MC very frustrating in how she jumped from suspect to suspect — each time absolutely certain she had it right. I didn't see the ending coming nor spot the culprit in advance, but I also didn't come away feeling satisfied.

Alex travels to Vermont to write the story of an orphanage with a long history of secrets and abuse. What she uncovers is a multi-generational scar that refuses to heal, and as she uncovers more and more of the truth, her own safety may be threatened by the ghosts of the past. This is a solid thriller hat kept me guessing until the final pages.
