I grew up watching Katie Couric on the Today show. Everyone talks about what a great interviewer she is, and I got turned off several years ago watching an interview where she didn't listen to an answer given her follow-up question. In the book she rarely acknowledges her faults and of course she is always right. Considering the direction "news" has gone she is one of the better reporters, but she is not to the level of those she admires. Reading this book you know where she stands politically and one should hardly be surprised. It was good finding out her side of the story about her relationship with Matt Lauer - where they really weren't friends off screen. I find it interesting that with her being viewed as a best friend that no one approached her about Lauer, and that she was oblivious to the situation. She does give good insight to journalism, television news programs, daytime television, direction media is going today, and many faces of the news.
How did I find this book? I grew up watching the Today show when Katie Couric was on it. This was also the January 2022 pick by Tinx for her book club, Literally, hosted through Literati.

I am one of probably a handful of people who does not watch morning TV programs but of course I had heard of Katie Couric- I had no idea she had such breadth of experience. This book is like sitting across from her for a chat- it is warm, honest, funny, sad and informative- if not a tad long. An enjoyable read from beginning to end.
Really 4.5 stars. I remember when this book first came out that people were all aghast that Katie was so critical of people, called people out etc etc. Honestly, I think the whole thing is a bit over blown. Is she unflinchingly honest? Yes, but none of it felt like a hit job to me. Also, I really appreciated her willingness to examine areas where she had fallen short and mistakes she had made.
The personal pieces of her story are also just so sad. Her daughters were exactly the age that my daughters are now when her first husband developed colon cancer and died so those parts were very difficult to listen to but overall I really enjoyed it!

I enjoyed the BTS parts of this book but it was entirely too long.
I listened to her audiobook, and all I can say is there is a reason why I have always loved her voice. Because this is her memoir and her life, I loved that she was open and authentic about HER mistakes etc. I loved that in the audio book she had clips from her interview.
Too many times the audience wants someone who is perfect, but I am glad that she is willing to be vulnerable about her imperfections and how those imperfections continue to make her learn and grow from them
100% recommend.
