Meh... The writing is basic, the plot far-fetched from start to finish and while there's attempts at charcter development, they don't quite work. The ending too was rather anti-climactic. This is a popcorn thriller. I'm totally ok with reading one of those on occasion - sort of like basically anything Freida McFadden writes. Maybe if I had gone in with the expectation to read something like that, it would have been better. You can breeze through this in a few hours, but it'll be a rather forgettable read.

This kept me on the edge of my seat. Dawn is looking forward to having a fun weekend with her husband at the surprise party for his birthday at the family cabin. Before the party can get started and before her husband’s arrival she finds a girl in the basement. She’s the one that’s going to be surprised this weekend!! Mike was a very interesting character. I won’t spoil the book but He had me fooled. Great read. Excited to read more from the author.

Oh wow. Okay, I know I've been saying "WOW" a lot, but it's not my fault if the books are so good the only way to describe it is by saying WOW-WOW-WOWZA, right?!

This is the first book of James Caine that I read, and boy did I get myself a good thriller-treat.
Let's start with a note for the author - I loved the writing! Very very much. It was clear, it was easy to read and easy to follow, I couldn't put this book down and I honestly read it in one sitting.
The story is great, the plot is amazing - and disturbing!, - the tense is there and pretty much all you're looking for in a good thriller/mystery/suspense is there, too. So yeah, I loved it and now I'm adding other James Caine's books to my tbr.

Back to The Family Cabin and this fantastic roller coaster of gasps-OMGs-emotions.

The story follows Dawn Nelson - a loving wife who decides to surprise her husband, Mike, with a weekend-birthday-getaway in their family cabin in the woods. It's not every day someone turns big 40, right?

So the plan is simple. Go to the cabin before Mike to arrange everything - sentimental decor, buy food and drinks, wait for their two other friends to come, - and then surprise Mike.
Dawn had everything planned, to the slightest detail. What she didn't anticipate was finding a young college student tied up in her cabin's basement. WHAT?!

Dawn is in shock, doesn't understand what happened. When Mike arrives at the cabin terror consumes her - should she tell him? Did he do it? Can she trust him? What should she do? How can she save the girl?

This book was intense! Not a complaint, because if a thriller isn't intense and doesn't have you on edge, it's not a good thriller and perhaps it's time to DNF. This one here is intense in a very good way!

Not only was it intense, it was disturbing at times and made me feel somewhat nauseous, which is not something that happens often.

I devoured this book page after page, desperately wanting to know what will happen next, gasping, OMGing, nearly screaming, not expecting the turns, trying to calm my heart from bursting out of my chest - WOWOWOWOW!

I did expect the ending would be what it actually was, but it didn't ruin the story at all for me. This book is great, and I'm so happy I had the chance to add yet another great thriller to my list.

Thank you NetGalley, Victory Editing and James Caine for providing me this ARC.

Another drama with a cabin setting. This book isn’t very long, so you can easily read in an afternoon. It starts out intriguing and the action doesn’t stop. Unfortunately it was a little too dark for my tastes.
