3.9 AVERAGE

If I had started with the manga I'm not sure I would have kept going with the series. There is a lot of fan service and the action doesn't translate as well as it does on screen. I think what made it work for me was being able to hear the characters voices in my head from watching the anime. Therefore... 3 stars. It should be able to stand on it's own and be awesome and I'm sad it doesn't. But I'm going to keep reading anyway. Perhaps volume one just falls short and the rest of the written series improves.

So to be fair, I never read manga, and now I know why. This was not good. So dumb

Volume 1: (July 21, 2016) This was a pleasant surprise! I ended up REALLY enjoying this! I happened to know quite a lot from people telling me about this and seeing stuff at Anime Boston each year, but I really enjoyed the idea and premise of this story and the characters. It honestly kind of reminded me of D. Grey Man but with WAY more humor. The amount of boobs and naked girls in this was unnecessary but like, there are always way too many boobs and naked girls in manga I stg. I especially loved Death the Kid because of his symmetrical OCD because I relate hardcore to that because I also have OCD with symmetry and I was crying laughing because he was hilarious but also crying because same, dude, same.
I'm not TOTALLY sure yet if I'll continue with this in the manga or just watch the anime because my library doesn't have the volumes... so, we'll see!

umm uhhh interesting
was not expecting to see what i saw

It’s the art style for me I can’t it needs it to get better soon

i love this series! it’s so funny and enjoy all the cool weapons!

Okay, I'm going to be That Person. I love the world of Soul Eater, love the style, like the story (though the first book is mostly just character introduction). But I found it nearly unreadable because the fanservice was so absurdly gratuitous, unnecessary, and excessive. I'm used to manga, I know what I'm getting into, so I sucked it up until the Maka panty shot at the end. Up until that point all of the other female characters besides her had been sexualized, but I appreciated that the author had left her out of it since she's so strong and, um, young. Once that happened I was done.

For whatever reason the anime's fanservice is significantly toned down, so I'll be continuing my exploration of the series with that instead.
