I picked this up on a whim at my local Asda as it was number one on the bestsellers list, and I'm so glad I did.

Though not the genre that I would normally choose, Belle is a book that is emotionally breathtaking and fast paced with a fantastic lead character and story.

Belle is a great character. I found that I connected with her thoughts and emotions quite deeply. Some awful circumstances changed the course of her childhood and her life for years afterwards and her strength throughout it all was admirable.

There is never a dull moment in the story and is a book that once you've started it you won't want to put it down.

I have wanted to read this book for a long time and I found out it wasn't bad. The descriptions of characters and places are detailed and make you feel you are there, the characters well written (my favourite has to be Mog) but all in all, it felt a bit long with some passages a bit unecessary. I think most of Belle's time in Marseille which feels a bit rushed and does not contribute to anything except delay Belle on her way home.

I am a big fan of this author and have liked every single book I have read by her. This one was no exception, it had a bit of everything in it. I felt she handled the subject matter very well.

I really enjoy reading Lesley Pearse - she managed to write about realistic female characters hit by all kinds of strokes of fate - but her books never feel cliche, ordinary, cheap interchangeable to me. Every one of her books feels unique and I really enjoy her prose, that is so much better than a lot of those in similar books. Belle is a really interesting character - and I absolutely loved following her adventure through life. She didn't have it easy, and she had to keep going through all kinds of bad luck - but at times it could all have been even so much worse. I love to see the world from the different POVs Pearse offers, and to understand people I wouldn't be able to identify with, without a story as well written as her books are. Belle is no exception to it - I was sucked in right away, and could hardlky put the book down till the very last page.
