WOW. Absolutely one of the tightest, most gorgeous comics I’ve ever read. That prose is just beautiful, and I am in love with this characterization of…I was gonna say Dick, but honestly everyone. Easily one of my new top favorite comics of all time.

Graphic: Death of parent
Moderate: Murder
This book is a really nice mix of a feels-go, humor-y story, while dealing with serious issues and themes (such as poverty and loss), while being murder mystery in essence– which I think is a balance more writers should strive for. There is a strong understanding of Dick Grayson’s character from the get-go for those who don’t know about him, but it’s also a strong re-do for his character after the MESS that DC has been doing with him for the last couple of years. The action scenes are really fluid and top notch – I actually think Bruce Redondo might be one of the best artists DC has right now. There are some really great scenes where you can see the characters moving on page, and I don’t know if I’ve seen much of that before in that style (it’s hard to explain without seeing it), but it’s really creative and something I think that works really well here. You could FEEL the emotions coming off the page in instances, particularly the first issue, and I’d love to know if others (particularly those who don’t follow DC comics) felt this too.
Additionally, I like that there are CONSEQUENCES for past events. Like Dick gets kicked in the head, and that fucks him up a bit because he’s still getting over a MAJOR BRAIN INJURY from when he got SHOT IN THE HEAD. I like seeing that kind of continuity in stories that are part of an overarching universe. This book is the first part of a larger arc, but it still ends on a strong note, while setting the stage for the larger mysteries to continue, and I can’t wait to see what happens next. Taylor’s doing a great job on this book and I’m glad to see it!
