I'm a sucker for fantasy stories about magical nuns. This is also my first read of Rogerson, and I wasn't disappointed. Artemnesia is a nun that cleanses the souls of recently deceased people to prevent the creation of demons. One day the convent is attacked and she inadvertently becomes the vessel for a powerful 5th tier demon called a revenant. They end up working together to fight back the demons and the darkness threatening to consume their world, and make several friends along the way. I really enjoyed the back and forth between Artemnesia and the revenant, the explanation of the magic and world, and the fight scenes. Rogerson does a fabulous job of describing actions and the world at large without going overboard, and the action keeps moving from chapter to chapter. I was constantly engaged in the story and wanted to know what happened next.
I would be more than willing to read the next in this series to see what lies in store next for the Vespertine, as well as characters like Marguerite and Leander.

I laughed, I cried, I cheered!
Writing a book where more than half the dialogue is between the mc and a voice in her head is not easy, but damn was this executed excellently.
Artemisia was beautiful rep of an autistic disabled woman, but she was also a vibrant character in her own right.
The plot was well paced, and the twist was unexpected but well executed.

I really liked this book. I loved the concept and world of this book. However, it felt like it started with a bang and fizzled out toward the end. The ending was still good, but it almost felt rushed.
It also felt like not much happened throughout the middle of the book, (or "the meat" of the book, if you will). But I loved the plot, the characters and overall concept of the book.
I read that Margaret Rogerson will not be writing another book in this series, which is extremely disappointing. This book would be much stronger as part of a series. I feel like if you didn't love the concept of nuns battling spirits as much as I did, this would not be a great standalone book.
I really hope she changes her mind because I would LOVE to read a book 2!
The only character that felt dry and bland to me was Charles (I had to check the book because I couldn't remember his name). If she does plan on writing another book, I hope she adds more to his character. I would love to see Jean become a more prominent character as well.
Ah, I know I genuinely enjoyed a book when I get excited thinking about what I'd like to see in an upcoming book. Again, I really hope she changes her mind and writes another one.
Also, more of a side note but I can see this being important to some readers. The reviews on the cover mention a "slow burn romance".
...what? There is no romance in this book. There are hints of what could become a romance but it is never followed up on, which again...second book..
Either way, I respect the author if she does not want to. It should be her choice. But my honest opinion is Vespertine has more potential as duology than a standalone.

“No wonder I had such an affinity for spirits. I had a place carved out for them already, waiting to be claimed.”
What a better way to start the year than by rereading one of my favorite books? Vespertine has everything I look for in a book: a compelling story, well thought-out and complex characters, a strong mythology and aesthetic, and just enough banter to make me chuckle every five pages.
While this book is perfect as it is, I can't help myself from praying that the author will be generous enough to give us a sequel (or at least a novella, or something). I would love to meet again Artemisia and Leander and Marguerite and Jean while they embark for another adventure in the mysterious land of Loraille!
