This is the story of Catherine and Lucian. Why is Catherine mute in the present and why did she leave her beloved Lucian?
Unfortunately this is a love story rather than the psychological thriller I expectedabd this disappointed me as the blurb led me to believe it would be a thriller.
I did like the fact that it captures the difficulties of starting g university and feeling like you need to be someone you aren't. However none of the characters are particularly likeable which made it hard to connect with the story at times.
The story unfolds using several timelines a device that seems to be much favoured by current writers amd it is used together effect by others.

4,5*

É um livro que nos prende. Simplesmente não conseguia parar, pois queria descobrir mais sobre a Catherine e o porquê de ela ter ficado incapaz de falar.

O livro não leva as 5*, porque consegui adivinhar os twists da história. Apesar disso, vale totalmente a pena.

I am always sorry when I don't finish a book. But if I really don't enjoy reading it and this feeling doesn't go away it wouldn't make sense to force it.
Life is too short to spend it with books you don't enjoy.

So Clare Empson's "Him" is a book about a woman who apparently meets the love of her life in college and then leaves him, marries someone else, and has children. But she never stops missing the other guy and keeps reading old letters and looking at pictures of him.
I did not find out why she broke up with Lucian in the first place and what happened when she met him again fifteen years later that led to her having a breakdown and got her to a psychiatric clinic.
Because I stopped reading after about a third of the book.
It felt to me like Catherine (the protagonist) kept wining about her life-decisions and not telling anybody what happened that was so horrible that she didn't have a choice.
Maybe it would have all made sense by the end of the book but I didn't want to spend any more time with Catherine and her problems.

A bit of a chick lit psychological thriller.
Love the flash backs to him, her 15years ago and now and the writing is totally intoxicating. Bordering on obsession the story pulls you in and makes you want to get to the end.
My only negative is it takes so long developing the back story that you feel “ok I know what’s happened 15yrs ahi now get on with it”

This book was incredible, I read it months ago now and have put off reviewing it because it’s impossible to put into words what I thought of it. In the present day Catherine has elective mutism, something traumatic has happened to her and now she can’t speak. It’s heart-breaking knowing the pain she’s in, and the struggle she’s having while knowing she can’t articulate what she’s thinking. In the past, fifteen years previously we slowly get to see Catherine and Lucien’s story. Lucien is from a different walk of life to Catherine and spends his time with his friends being rather unlikeable. Catherine and Lucien had a passionate and fiery relationship. The book flicks between the past and the present and we see Catherine and Lucien’s perspectives. Gradually we begin to see why these two fell for each other and a sense of unease begins to build as to why Catherine has ended up unable to speak. The end when it comes is a shock and left me breathless. This is one of those books that is impossible to do justice to but it’s beautifully written, compelling and just brilliant. I highly recommend this on. I’m already looking forward to whatever Clare Empson writes next!

I feel like this book was very predictable. It was hard to relate to the FMC. It’s also like my fifth book in a month with the name Lucien in it.
