I didn't have very high expectations for this book, since I read Cassandra Clares "Mortal Instruments" series years ago and didn't particulary enjoy it. But to my surprise, I found the first book of this series so captivating that I want to explore this series more. Three reasons why I liked it, although I didn't like other books in the same world:
- I was already familiar with the world this takes place in and found it very refreshing and interessting to see it play out in a historical setting
- I found the characters more likeable
- I enjoyed the steam punk vibes I got throughout the story
The reason why I only gave four out of five stars is because the story was at times predicatable and felt like something I had read before. That being said, it was a light, entertaining read. I struggled to get into the story for the first few chapters, but as soon as I did, I could not put it down, and as I was done I felt myself wanting to read more of the story.

**SPOILERS AHEAD: WARNING!**
Review: Overall it was a decent read. I give it such a low rating just because the writing style. I feel that Clare could have put so much more heart and soul into this book, and possibly even into the TMI series (haven’t read them). Let me explain further before I get jumped on… The things that bothered me winded up being generic terms that are more than likely being referred to as the same in TMI. There were things that were a bit bland as I read, I ran into things like ‘had had’ or ‘was was’ too many times. If I read the word obliged one more time I might be in a murderous mood (not really, though, you catch my drift). Also, when Clare writes about the enchanted armor and the items that Shadowhunters must wear, she builds it up to be something so great and slams it down with insisting that it is all called gear (How original might I add). Or the markings that the Shadowhunters have on their bodies, they are called marks. I just think that she could have been more creative, and I feel that if she was we, as the reader, could have been swallowed up more efficiently by a powerful world that she created. But it’s hard to get so involved and swept away when…’they arrived in their black gear.’
Continuing on - Overall, Clare as an author still has a few ways to go in improving her writing style and skill. However, if we turn the other way, and look at the story itself - I rather enjoyed it myself. Despite the numerous slow parts, it was actually worth it when the story picked up the pace. I believe that Clare has a great idea, but is maybe so rushed to finish that she doesn’t take the time to fully create the world she’s building. I would’ve liked to have seen this story built like how J.K. Rowling built up Harry Potter; how she created such depth and backing in each character, how she made sure she knew every detail there was to tell. I believe that will make Clare successful in her future endeavors. It is a great story and has such a fascinating idea built into the story. I love the horror/creepiness that is felt through the story. If I was home alone in the dark I would probably lock myself in the closet and read this book.
With that- I know I am reviewing this book, so far without having read the rest of the trilogy, so those reading this review also take that into consideration. However, I DO plan to continue with the trilogy, and I recommend it to those who are able to look past the writing style and see just the story. You won’t regret it! (and I am sure there are worse books than this.)
