I love this book.

I made it 5 hours into the 14 hour audiobook before giving up, and my only regret is that I didn't stop sooner. This book has excellent reviews, so an hour in I was rather surprised, at 3 hours I was becoming deeply worried, and by the 5th hour I could no longer stand the weirdly fake and stilted interpersonal interactions. This author writes about human emotions as if she's a newly sentient slime mold whose only knowledge of humanity comes from binge watching jersey shore.

I'm tempted to give a bunch of examples of characters completely altering their emotions and behaviors simply because the plot demanded it, or quoting some of the robotic dialog interspersed between unrealistic plot points, but I honestly don't want to spend anymore time thinking about this miserable excuse for a book.

The top negative review for this book was from Kat Kennedy, and man do I wish I had read it before starting, "...so I can go back to imagining a world where authors like this are forcibly chained to their desks and made to read their own stories over and over again until they’re sorry."

I'm surprised I'm giving this book 4 stars taking into account my history with Cassandra Clare.

Let's be honest: I don't like her. And I don't liker her writing style, at least in the Mortal Instruments; but this book was a nice surprise because, while it was spectacular, it was muuuuch better than the two books of TMI that I've read. That said, maybe the fact that I read it translated into Spanish has something to do, but I'm willing to give her some credit.

I still don't relate to her characters. I don't like Will that much (though everybody seems to be in love with him) and Tessa sometimes almost unbearable- I guess that was her intention when writing her. But she's no Clary. And for that I'm eternally thankful. I genuinely like Jem, Charlotte, and even poor Henry.

However, the plot is the best improvement, because for once, I feel it makes some sense, it doesn't feel rush and leaves me wanting to read more. Though the "clockwork" humanoid-things is not new in literature (the first Doctor Who book I read was about that), the book has a good pace and the just pinch of mystery to keep the reader hooked.

I hope that the remaining books are as good as this one. I've lost faith in TMI, but there is still a chance for this to be great! To me, of course.

I really enjoyed it! I saw a lot of Jace in Will so it must be a Herondale thing to act that way. I got similar vibes to City if Bones!

"One must always be careful of books and what is inside them, for words have the power to change us."

When I first read this book I must have been about 14, 15 at most, and I was obsessed. The characters, the world, the writing, all of it enthralled little teenage me. Rereading it at 21 I have to say, though I was nervous going in, it holds up. I've read much more and much wider since then so I can't say I'm still quite as awed by it, but I do love these characters so much. And rereading this book took me right back to a time in my life I've come to feel so separate from, which is, I think, one of the most beautiful things a book can do.

There's not much else that I have to say. I hold these books so close to my heart because of who I was when I first read and adored them. And I'm so very pleased that this one is almost just as good as it was back then.

Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in
