I read this book about 8 years ago and going into it again I remembered nothing. The setting and vibes are immaculate. I really can’t get behind the Will hype anymore though. From what I vaguely remember he gets better but in this book he is truly just an asshole. Jem is such a sweetheart though :) love him and Tessa’s friendship (and would like it to remain just that)

This book had lots to live up to after the first three mortal instruments books and it did not disappoint! I loved the setting of Victorian London and found it so easy to picture.
Tessa has got to be one of my favourite female characters ever, I feel her love of books and I admire her bravery so much. Will was a complicated character but so sarcastic and charming, I can’t wait to find out more about him. Jem was the sweetest ever and I just want to hug him.
Sophie, Thomas, Charlotte and Henry were also all amazing and I could easily visualise them all living in the institute.
While I did guess that De Quincey wasn’t the magister, I did not expect the twist! Mortmain could have obviously been the villain which made the reveal more shocking? I really trusted that Nathaniel was just Tessa’s naïve brother and he couldn’t betray her but I was wrong.
I loved the mention of church and I am so so excited to keep reading this series.

Oh, what a joy this would have been for my middle-school self! Unfortunately, I personally feel that although the plot was fairly exciting with twists and turns everywhere, the writing itself left much to be desired, even as a YA book. A lot of the writing was quite blunt ("Tessa realized two things: 1) He was lying and 2) She had to run." or something of the sort) and many of the characters were very polarizingly (not a word but it should be) stereotypical. Maybe more of a review later-I have more to say, but not enough time or motivation to do so.
