“One must always be careful of books," said Tessa, "and what is inside them, for words have the power to change us.”

I think what I find appealing about this book is the setting more than the story. I like the atmosphere of 1800s London and the main characters are quite likable as well. the references to A Tale of Two Cities are a bonus. Also, Jem deserves the whole world.

Fast light read. Exciting adventure. Good slow burn romance.

Wow... just realised how long it took me to read this.

Although I found the first half of the book slow and confusing (probably because I should improve my English reading), it sets the beginning scenario quite well. Cassandra Clare presents such an interesting and mysterious universe that one just wants to find out more. With the usual dosis of action and fear of everyone’s lives, the first book of this trilogy helped me to rediscover/ continue loving this book series.

I’ve been trying to get into Cassandra Clare’s universe for nearly 7 years. Maybe this is finally my time.

When sixteen-year-old Tessa Gray crosses the ocean to find her brother, her destination is England, the time is the reign of Queen Victoria, and something terrifying is waiting for her in London's Downworld, where vampires, warlocks and other supernatural folk stalk the gaslit streets. Only the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the world of demons, keep order amidst the chaos. Kidnapped by the mysterious Dark Sisters, members of a secret organization called The Pandemonium Club, Tessa soon learns that she herself is a Downworlder with a rare ability: the power to transform, at will, into another person. What's more, the Magister, the shadowy figure who runs the Club, will stop at nothing to claim Tessa's power for his own. Content warning for addiction, death of a parent and mild sexism. I tried reading Clockwork Angel when it was first released but didn’t really get into it at the time, and finally decided to try the audiobook. I think that was the right choice. Clockwork Angel made me feel at home with Clare’s writing style, the superb world building, familiar terminology and the paranormal world that makes up the Shadowhunters books. Like City of Bones, I felt the story was slow at first, though by the end I felt more invested in the characters and eager to continue on with the series. The audiobook did make the experience more enjoyable with Jennifer Ehle’s outstanding narration, though due to the length of the audiobook and slow pace it still took me over two weeks to get through it. The Victorian London setting makes a charming backdrop for the story, and Clare has done her research and provided a detailed look at the time frame. The manners, locations, horse drawn carriages, and wardrobes set the scene perfectly. The characters here were interesting and I think it was a good choice to include some immortal characters that appeared in The Mortal Instruments. I recommend this book for fans of the Shadowhunters world.

4.5

I'm so glad that I liked it better than The Mortal Instruments. Clockwork Angel was so interesting throughout and kept me guessing as to what's going to happen next.
I knew that I was going to like it, but I never thought I'd love this book so much.
And the characters, each one of them is so intriguing and complex and even though I've known for a very short time, I can say that I'm going to absolutely love them.

Tessa not being a Shadowhunter spiced things up because you don't even know what exactly she is. And I also found it funny that in the Mortal Instruments, the Lightwoods and Herondales are very friendly while in this book, Gabriel Lightwood and Will hated each other lol.

As much as I loved it, I did find that Tessa fit right in with the Shadowhunters and now that I think about it, the same happened with Clary Fray from the Mortal Instruments. They never questioned anything and I find that unsettling because if I were to find out that there was this group of people who fought actual demons, I would absolutely freak out.

Overall, I really enjoyed it, and I'm excited about the sequels!
