I understand that this set of books isn't great literature, but even compared to the first one it lacked a lot. There was little coherence between the FIVE different plots; Ana felt more childish than in the first one, and Christian was barely more than a one-dimensional character. I can see how EL James tried to go out of her comfort zone with the two thriller plot points but I just didn't resonate with them, especially with the ending. The last page felt so out of left field for me that I had actually forgotten that character even existed. The billiard scene and birthday party were the saving points of this book.
Hate to say it, but there were far fewer sex scenes in this one and of the ones that were fully detailed, they just weren't as /erotic/ compared to the first book (with the exception of two). I've started, and will finish, the third one and it's already so much better; this is just a drag that you have to get through for the finale.

this book was better than the first but somehow even more cringe. i’m asexual so half the time I have no idea what the hell I’m reading I’m literally only here for the drama.
i am deceased bc it took christan a book AND A HALF TO SAY I LOVE YOU TO ANA LIKE BROTHA😭
Anyway I have to read the third book now because the ending was just too much of a cliffhanger not to.

Ana and Christian’s relationship dramatically improved, and this book took back the bad representation of BDSM that upset so many readers. The pacing and plot points are a bit messy, but I actually found myself enjoying this one.
