I really love this author’s writing style but everything else about this book sucks.
Everybody needs a love interest it seems. Not a single female character is free from a complex and oh-so tragic romance plot. It’s heteronormative to an embarrassing level.
Kiri was such a compelling antagonist up until she was nerfed to make Solmir seem even more evil, but he just felt like an unnecessary plot device. Only added in to have something to write about. That could be said about all the side characters. They were just there to fill up space. So much of the book is just navel gazing and rehashing the same conflict over and over. That time could’ve been used to actually get to know the characters. It felt like just watched paper cutouts on a stage.

Good start then the pacing moved at a glacial pace and was quite boring.

Slower and a little disjointed at the beginning, but things fall into place and pickup speed about half way through. Definitely going to read the next book.

I really enjoyed this story and it reminds me a lot of some polish folklore. I won’t deny there were some aspect with the writing that threw me off, the repeated mentions of actions (ran a hand down his face, leaned in doorway) only a few sentences apart. I still very much enjoyed the book. It kept me interested and engaged the entire time. Did I want to reach in the book and slap around some character, yes I did. But for me it’s a good thing. The ending was a whirlwind of action and makes you want to grab the next book and dive right in.

I liked it! I thought it was entertaining and engaging to the end; I thought the characters were easy to relate to and like; I thought the pace was good; and I thought the magic system/plot was unique. I did think the sentence structuring was difficult to get use to at the beginning, requiring me to reread sentences to fully understand meaning. And I wish the author spent a little more time developing the backstory to the plot and better transitioning/linking one plot point and one magic aspect to the next. Lastly, I really wish there was a world map…but I’m a sucker for a map at the beginning of a fantasy book! Overall, I’m hooked! I do love a good book about magic based in nature 🌼 and about the love between sisters 💕 !!
