While some parts are a bit shaky, as one would expect from a debut novel, this was overall an engaging story, that ties together bits from various different fairytales to make something dark and intriguing of its own. I read the Nightshade Crown series before this one, and can see the similarities between the two of how Whitten deals with religion and myths, and appreciate her takes on them. When it comes down to it, I’m still just a sucker for anything that resembles Beauty and the Beast, and this book has plenty of that, so of course I was going to enjoy it. For those that are looking for a similar read, I’d recommend Poranek’s Where the Dark Stands Still.

This book was fantastic! It’s been awhile since I’ve read such a full bodied - soul consuming fantasy and I LOVED this book!! It took a minute for me to get into it (this book is slow burn in its finest form) but I simply adore Eammon and Red and NEED more
