I thoroughly enjoyed this book on audio and gave it 5 stars because this is a book that I did not know I needed. I feel connected more than anything to my own dinner table through the eyes of the author Bill Buford because of his own exploration and appreciation of French cooking.
I listened the impeccable French and smattering of Italian language to be transported to the authors’ sense of place.

The memoir led to moments of tears and joy when I was cooking, gardening, and any other moment that I could listen to the audio. This year more than anything I wanted to find some escapism into something that brings joy, especially in my personal life when the world can seem so chaotic.

This time bill is in France learning to cook in the French style. I definitely enjoyed him in Italy more than this one.

While I enjoyed much of the book, at times it really got bogged down. The detailed discussions of Italy’s influence on French cuisine and the surrounding ongoing debate left me nonplussed. The book succeeds best when Buford shares his personal experiences in the kitchen and his growing understanding of the culture and community of Lyon. The descriptions of the foods- both their provenance and preparations- were captivating.
