I’m coming to this as a huge fan of Pete Wentz and Fall Out Boy, as well as a fan of Lisa Stearle’s work with the Modern Witch’s tarot deck.
Having read Pete’s novel, Gray, when it came out, I can firmly say that graphic novels work much better with Pete’s style of writing and lyricism. The nature of storytelling in graphic novels, and the necessary conciseness, works really well with his sharp wit. As a FOB fan, I would have liked to see more lyric entries from Pete, but I enjoyed how they served as bookends at the beginning and the end. I think Pete very much found his niche here, and would love if this was serialized - I feel like there’s so much still left to say.
The illustrations are stunning, and for such dark content, feel light and beautiful in a way that feels both unexpected and perfectly right. With a focus on the details, the illustrations add a lot of additional story and context that I really enjoyed. I liked the little “Easter eggs” that I could find throughout, especially being partial to the PUP album cover.
Overall, I expected Pete to be good at this, but I’m glad to say it exceeded my expectations. It is hopeful without being saccharine, and dark without being bleak. Where a reader might think it would be the kind of book that’s going to provide answers or lessons, it only asks questions - and they’re good ones.

I loved that it came with a playlist. The full experience of reading and listening was really cool
Graphic: Suicide attempt
Minor: Self harm
Ok so this is a bit of a triggery book. And it’s a bit dark. But by being so blatant about this factors I feel like it’s able to be humorous and provide a kind of light at the end of the tunnel feel.
I loved the dark humor of the MC and that she broke the fourth wall and talked to the reader. I feel like her reasoning for wanting to unalive herself were more of a grab for attention than anything.
The ending had me thinking this is a series.

Pete Wentz wrote this. Incredible. No, seriously, I loved this graphic novel. Funny with amazing pop culture references (I love a good Twilight reference especially) and of course, the sadness that is being a depressed teenage girl. I love the playlist and how we had a QR code hidden in part of the book. It was impossible to put down. Ash & Liv are adorable and I love this book.
