This book IS intense. I won't go into any details here, hundreds of others have done so, but let me just say, if you don't get pulled into this book by the very first page, well, then you must lead a rather horrifying life!!

Coming off reading Yumi and Nightmare painter may color the rating somewhat as they are pretty much totally opposite in terms of mood and other aspects.. However, there was still something I enjoyed here quite a bit.

I've read Koontz before with middling feelings but here I think the characters and the plot were good. Even the despicable antagonist was interesting in its sick depiction. Also the main character and their background and struggles were interesting to me. It got very claustrophobic at times with varying degrees of stakes on the line.

Something about the flow of his writing here also worked for me.

The overall package was quite tight. Few somewhat overly descriptive scenes but nothing to bring it down too much.

this review keeps deleting on me randomly so they’re getting shorter and shorter every time i rewrite it
i did not expect to like this one as much as i did but it was a really good time! super well written with very interesting characters and it was viscerally freaky and tense.
can definitely tell that preston and child were koontz fans and i’m fs not mad about it
having the split perspectives of the antagonist and the mc was super interesting and really helped build the tension

Chyna Shepard finds herself in a fight for survival as a murderous sociopath, Edgler Foreman Vess, invades the Napa Valley home where she's staying. Trapped and hunted, Chyna's instincts kick in as she navigates the deadly game of cat and mouse with Vess. With her past experiences toughening her resolve, Chyna is determined to escape alive. However, when she discovers that Vess plans to target an innocent victim, Chyna's mission shifts from self-preservation to saving others. As the threat intensifies, Chyna must summon every ounce of courage and resourcefulness to outsmart Vess and protect the vulnerable.

Thoughts: This was very different than what I usually read. I can see why some people really enjoy psychological thrillers, but I usually end up with a million unanswered questionsI

It started slow for me and I had to tell myself how much I wanted to read it to keep going. I didn't love the characters at first or feel pulled in by their stories but as I kept reading I suddenly found myself so sucked it I couldn't stop. I was scared sitting in my apartment, in the middle of the day, at any noise that would happen and the ending was everything you want from this kind of book. Only 4 stars because the start.
