While the story had the potential to be really interesting, the narrative style was dry and deadpan and ultimately failed to keep me engaged.

This book was great (for a memoir, considering that I don't like them)! Not my favorite thing as I don't love reading about abuse/tragic backstories, but it's always interesting to see how people overcome struggles that they were handled as a child, and the difference between family members in that regard.

I've been making more of an effort to read non-fiction in the past year and this was one of the better ones!
Sometimes my problem with nonfiction is when things get tooooo real. The Glass Castle was an interesting and at times unbelievable life story- but that means it could also be unbelievable sad. The notion that people would raise their kids in this way, or rather not raise them in a lot of instances. The novel begins with a story of Jeannette's earliest memory, catching herself on fire while trying to boil hot dogs to eat. What three year old is using a stove, let alone unsupervised. This is the tip of the iceberg. Against all odds, this story, her story, has a relatively happy ending, but at what cost?
It was a powerful book, but I'm ready to go back into my fantasy worlds now.

Written to be at once lyrical, poignant, and direct, Walls has a story worth sharing and a mastery of prose to tell it
