this book was a ROLLERCOASTER. i honestly hated it until the very end, not because the writing was bad, i loved the writing, but just because the story just kept on getting worse and worse until the last 70 pages or so when I finally enjoyed reading it. Honestly even tho it was such an emotional read, i think everyone should give it it a try

Less a coming-of-age story and more a diary about growing up in poverty.   These kind of stories are not my jam and I should probably stop reading them.

Such an ugly look at childhood but beautifully glides between being poor and having to deal with certain roadblocks through trauma and grief and regaining confidence. Fantastic look at life itself and growing up poor.

I really enjoyed the storytelling of the author and her narration of her own dysfunctional family's story, I feel like it really added depth to her memoir. I wouldn't wish her childhood on anyone, that's for sure. The ending felt a little like a sizzle out but I'm not bothered.
