“I found myself always wanting to be somewhere other than where I was.”

This book was part of my AP English curriculum in high school and I thoroughly enjoyed it. So much so, I stole the book. Shhh….

I loved the amount of lessons that there were in this book and her perspective on the story. Jeanette had a difficult childhood- one that forced her to grow up quickly along with her siblings. She shares what this life was like and how they coped with it.

It’s tragic and beautiful at the same time.

There’s just something about a dysfunctional family memoir that really keeps my interest. It’s such a bittersweet story, and Walls is a wonderful author.

I don’t know how to say this without sounding like a meanie, but the first half of the book was boring. of course I don’t mean that the abuse wasn’t shocking and appalling, I mean that most of the first half was day to day things like playing with neighbors.

the rest of the book I got angry at these horrible parents but the author and two of her siblings were never angry??? I kept waiting for some confrontation or they’d get cut out of their kids’ lives but it never happened?????

So wonderfully written and so enrapturing that I read it in just three days, which is a testament to how good this memoir was given how some moments were hard to read. So many brutal moments which fill you with the same anger the kids must have felt back then, but they are perfectly juxtaposed with sweet moments to accurately capture the dilemma which is a child’s relationship with their parents. Now one of my fav memoirs!

Listened to this memoir and just WOW! 10/10 recommend for an audiobook since it is in the authors voice. It’s hard to judge someone’s life and give a rating but my goodness this was awesome! Her life is wild and crazy and the fact she has been able to be turn it around and be successful is so amazing.

If you gave me $1 every time I gasped “what the fuck” while reading this, I would’ve been able to send those kids to New York myself
