This was a very interesting story. I had not heard of Hitler having people taste his food before he ate it. Of course, the tasters had no choice.

The story and the characters kept me engaged with only a few "Oh come on" moments. If you are a fan of WWII stories, I highly recommend this one.

I really wanted to like this book, but something about the writing style just didn’t lend depth to the characters. Magda had no affiliations or beliefs and all of a sudden she meets a captain and he immediately tells her of his top secret anti-Hitler mission and she’s like yes. This is now my passion too. The second half is better than the first. It was fine.

This book showed a different side of WW2 than what I have read of it. The inside world of Hitler and his staff was shown inside Germany as the war went on. A story of survival in many different forms, from protecting the Fuhrer to surviving a concentration camp. Great book packed with action, romance, terror, and heartbreak.

Early 1943: Magda Ritter's parents send her to relatives in Bavaria, hoping to keep her safe from the Allied bombs strafing Berlin. Young German women are expected to do their duty-working for the Reich or marrying to produce strong, healthy children. After an interview with the civil service, Magda is assigned to the Berghof, Hitler's mountain retreat. Only after weeks of training does she learn her assignment: she will be one of several young women tasting the Fuhrer's food, offering herself in sacrifice to keep him from being poisoned.

I really enjoyed this book and read it very quickly, excited to find out what happens next. I don't want to spoil the end, but I found it to be a little to fantastical and a bit too much on the "fiction" side of historical fiction. The author did a wonderful job describing Germany during the war, from the optimism of the early years to the acknowledgment that the end was near. Couldn't give it 5 stars for the ending, but I definitely still recommend it.
