This was a quick, easy, and enjoyable read albeit rather predictable and scattered at times. I liked the use of the diary format, but also think maybe it is what made the entire plot and characters less developed (with the exception of Elizabeth who is telling the story). Most characters had such a good base and involvement in the story that I really wanted to know more about them and how they ended up there. I wanted more than a superficial reason for their involvement in Elizabeth's life. Sometimes it seemed they were so quickly inserted into (and sometimes removed from) the storyline that it was a loss to the overall story.
Besides the main character of Elizabeth, the character of Gideon was probably the most developed because he was a consistent character throughout the book. Yet there was still something missing. In the beginning of the book, I thought some details about Gideon were unnecessary. I think maybe the author was trying too hard to make the reader hate him. I thought his character was a bit scattered and his motives could have used more explanation. Since the main plot line of the whole book is Elizabeth's character fleeing through time from Gideon, I would have liked that connection a little neater.
The stories over time were interesting, but I think there could have been so much more to this book. The author's ideas were genuinely good and I would have liked to see a bit more detail for a fuller story. Overall, though, it was entertaining and worth reading.

Rereading (actually listening to audiobook on Libby) and surprised at how long ago it was since I read it. Very pleasant to visit this book again. Very happy to have discovered audiobooks on Libby. It makes the drives to work very enjoyable.
Very enjoyable story. My favorite parts are Bess’ stories of her various life points, I loved listening to them all but esp when she was a combat nurse during WWI.
Plan to start the 2nd book on audiobooks from Libby.
