I can't remember exactly when I first read these books. But I loved them. Arthur has been written about SO MUCH, but Mary Stewart carves out her own special space on the shelf with her incredible set of stories. I enjoyed the angle of writing from Merlin's point of view. I highly recommend these. I hope to read them again soon.
I read this once before years and years ago and didn't like it very much. (That was before I developed good taste. ;-)
I decided to read it again because I'd heard such good things about the rest of the series and it seemed like something I actually would really like. I didn't remember anything about it except for the very beginning, so it was like reading it for the first time. I LOVED it! So well written, such a beautiful way to weave the legend in there and develop it further. Just so well done. I can't wait to read the next in the series!
The more Arthurian legend books I read, the more I love it and the more obsessed I become with it. It's such a fascinating world to me!

I sometimes manage to forget what an excellent writer Mary Stewart was, since the plots of her rather Gothic mysteries are so engaging that you can plow through them without considering the writing. But in her Arthurian books it is so very obvious what excellently written and plotted books they are--don't get me wrong, they are just as engaging as the mysteries, but since they're longer, the quality really makes itself felt.
The classic tale of the origins of Merlin. Wonderful today as when it was first written.
A pretty boring book overall. Got through about half of it on Audiobook and couldnt bring myself to finish it. Merlin feels like a really flat character. I'm not sure if the author intentionally made him this way because he isn't a normal human and is supposed to be above normal human emotion, but it made the book really anticlimactic without any highs and lows for the character which would typically makes a character really relatable and lovable and gets you really into a book because you feel the emotions they are feeling and what to go through the experiences with them.

Of all Arthurian sagas - and I love them - this is my absolute favourite. Love them.
