Fairytale retellings aren’t usually my thing but this one just felt different. This is a Beauty & The Beast retelling. But this time, add magical paintings and Elizabeth Lim’s amazing storytelling to weave together a work I’d totally read again and again.

The feeling I got when I read "The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea." I escaped to a new world. I was drawn in and completely captivated. This book was fantastic and beautiful. I'm in love and can't wait to begin my friends to read it.

Fortunate favors those who leap, and so she jumped straight into the jaws of dragons and destiny.
A refreshing Beauty and the Beast–inspired fairytale rooted in Asian mythology, filled with dragons, red strings of fate, magical turtles, and even spicy noodles. Cozy writing, heartfelt family bonds, and the romance between Tru and Elang was so heartbreakingly tender that it broke me and put me back together and I loved every bit of it.

This book took me out of such a bad reading slump! I really enjoyed the book and the story. I feel like this author can do romantasy really well. I really liked the relationship between Elang and Tru. It started off with losing a father but ended with a great family story as well as a love story. I liked Fal and Nomi and eventually Mama came around. The blue hair didnt make too much of a difference in the plot. I thought there might be more to it. The world building was really cool and some reveals were shocking too. I did cry a lot near the end. It was well written and easy to follow and immerse myself in. Definitely recommend!
Okay spoilers below:
Tru's father goes missing on a saling expedition and then 5 years later, we see that Tru has started mastering the art of painting forgeries and earns money that way with her mentor, Gaari. Her mother has some gambling debts and so those people come after Tru and her family, but then Elang saves them and comes up with a proposition for Tru. They'll get married so Elang can break his curse and so Tru can find out what happened to her father. Later, we find out Gaari was actually Elang and that he had loved her even before they met. He had been disguising himself as random people for years and even left things out for her family so they wouldnt have to suffer as much. HOW SWEET! Shani the demon turns on Tru but then later on she helps them defeat Nazayun. I'm glad Tru was able to paint him to send him to Oblivion. Also Baba comes back since she tricked Nazayun when she drew Elang's reflection in his eye. That was so clever! When Elang first passed, I was worried he would never come back. But then THREE agonizing years later, she meets him and he doesn't recgnize her right away until she hands him the red string and then HE REMEMBERS HER AND THEY GET TO BE TOGETHER AGAIN. I'm not sure how he came back to this life, but I'm glad they found each other. Elang just wanted her to choose him. Too bad their curse is that one of them has to die, but now they can be humans together.

One of my anticipated reads and I’m so glad it didn’t disappoint. A forgery of fates is heartwarming love story with beautiful descriptions of the setting and characters.
At first I felt like the beginning reminded me too much of Lims other series which is the Spin the dawn duology both characters share more tragic past but after reading on the simalrites ended there.
I loved tru, her refusal to give up hope and her determination to do right by her family made her a compelling character, the chemistry of her and elang was beautiful and I liked how bond between them developed gradually. The some of the twists of the story I did guess so that’s why it’s 4 star not a 5.
