This could have been SO great. It is the type of thing I would normally like a lot. As it is, it was sorely lacking something. I could see the potential, I really could, which made the let down so much worse. Most of the characters were only 'alright-ish' nothing I would write home about. (Not that I do that kind of thing, haha!) Some I liked and ended up feeling sorry that they were in this book. It was their ruin, they deserve so much more. Some I found myself asking why they were even there. The plot was dragged out majorly, which annoys me if it isn't done well. I doubt I will be reading the next as it would probably be like torture. The characters I liked would be the only reason if I actually did. The Author was dangling this plot on the edge of bullshit, it was almost like dangling sweets in front of a kid and snatching it back just as their fingers touched it. Seriously. Something cool would happen and I would think this is it, that greatness I can almost taste is about to come into play, then it would drag on some more and I would be like 'okay, my mistake.' The whole book went on like this. She pulled her book's own greatness out from under it so hard it was left toppling over the cliff of just readable. The plus, I got it free on kindle! Read it, if you have time and no other book....

I really enjoyed this book! Yes, it's a bit predictable and there is some depth lacking from Frey's character (at least right now). There were some holes in the beginning where I felt like I had to fill things in myself in order for the story to make sense. I'm giving the author the benefit of the doubt in thinking she did it on purpose because Frey is also unsure of her past? I'm going with that.

If you want a quick read for some fun, clean fantasy, then I suggest this book. It has things we are familiar with, but it also had some original aspects I had never read before. I mean, I could hardly put it down because I wanted to hear more about how to piece Frey's past together. I'm excited yo continue reading the saga!

Interesting and entertaining book, it kept my attention, but at the end it left me thinking, "WTF?"....
I was reading on my iphone and I kept thinking there must be another chapter or a epilogue, or something..
Lots of random disconnected events, some explained, some fit toghether, or became clear, some never did, and neither did the ending.. What happened? I finished the book, and I still don't know...
Probably wont read any more of this series...

Frey is essentially a who-am-I? mystery with a magical vibe. The beginning is a little confusing, as Frey has no idea what's going on - in fact, she has been bound from her magic and her knowledge- and, as a result, the reader doesn't know either. The gradual revelations are intriguing and keep the reader engaged, but there was not quite the big pay-off of information at the end, which would have been nice. I'll be picking up the next book out of curiosity.

Elfreya has never fit in with the other elves of her village and isn't even welcome at home, with her Aunt. She isn't magical and is more clumsy than the others. In fact, she had her own Council Assigned teacher, Junnie to help her as much as was possible. That is until a stranger arrives in the town, named Chevelle. He is a dark elf from the Northern Realms and around him Elfreya is slowly able to master some small portions of her magic. All was going well before she was dragged before the Council and convicted for practicing Dark Magic without a trial.

She has now escaped and is on the run to the North following a map she accidentally cast as a spell onto her hands. She isn't sure what will happen when she reaches the North, but it has to be better than whatever the Council has planned for her. The question is: can she trust Chevelle to help her or will he just drag her back to the village to face her punishment?

This is the first book in a series and the only one that I have read thus far. I found myself bored during certain parts of the book, such as the journal, because it wasn't a surprise to me. In fact I wasn't really surprised by anything that I discovered in this book, which is kind of disappointing to me. All in all it is a good YA fantasy book that I am sure you will enjoy.

I manged about 40% of this book before giving up. It was just so boring. The pacing felt off, the characters were dull and uninteresting, I'm not sure there was even a plot in there and the stale 1st person POV really did not help.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and there was such an unexpected plot twist I was flabbergasted! I need more of these books!

I’ll be honest, this book was hard for me to finish. I liked the plot, but I had to push to finish. I felt like I kept missing things because it skipped over it. Every time you thought you were going to know what was going on, the story diverted. I know that was part of the story, but it made it so hard to follow at some points. I’m also not sure how I felt about the main character -Frey. I wanted to like her, but I don’t know that I can.

This book follows Frey as she goes from being the village misfit to discovering that
Spoiler her magic has been bound from her
while accumulating a collection of companions who help her learn about her mysterious past and to activate her magical powers.
Things I liked:
The mysterious map - I found that very intriguing as a motive for continuing a journey.
Ruby - she's a fascinating, complex and colourful character who I'd like to see more of.
The dreaded love triangle seems to have been avoided - at least in this book.
Steed - a likeable rogue who's good with horses (though his name is a bit eyebrow-raising).

Things I didn't like so much:
As a protagonist, Frey was rather bland. We don't have many ideas of her as an individual, or what her likes and dislikes are. I hope this will be improved on in the rest of the series.
Chevelle is just a little too cliche as an elvish love interest (black hair, blue eyes that are mentioned a tad too often, pale skin), and the attraction between him and Frey borders on insta-love.
The prologue didn't really need to be a prologue, and could have easily slotted into its chronological place in the story.

Although the premise could have been interesting, the execution was not so good. even though the main character is supposed to be an adult, she is treated like a child, drugged, kidnapped, controlled... and act like it's ok. A little Stockholm syndrome stuck in the mix. I wish YA novel had really nice male characters instead of control freaks.
