Wow! What a great historical romance! This is Shannon Drake's forte. This book is old, published in 1986. But, I wish they wrote them like this today.
Elise is captured by a loyal knight after a raid by thieves at the castle where Elise has gone to pay her respects to King Henry after his death. Bryan believes she is one of the thieves. But, Elise can't tell him the truth about why she was at the castle. The lie she told him cost her everything.
Bryan on the other hand will come out a hero. Elise has allies though and connives to make sure Bryan pays dearly for what he did to her.
When her plan succeeds, she regrets it. But, it's too late to undo it.
So, she lives in misery, both hating Bryan and loving him.
When Bryan must go fight for his king, Elise forgets most of her anger and works to find her way to him.
This is the prototype historical romances should follow. Realistic, no spoiled society heroines. Elise was robbed of the freedom she had so cherished. Robbed of the man she loved and found herself driven by fury and revenge. She gets her justice, but it takes time for everything to work out.
Bryan's crime was in assuming the worst about Elise. He did want her to feel love for him, but couldn't win her forgiveness. But, despite the long times apart, disappointments, heartbreak, temptations, and hardships their love survived and grew. Sigh! A+
