hmmm i tbh did not love this book. mostly i just found descriptions and narration to be kind of vague and sometimes confusing. it was also just very extremely violent and contained super graphic descriptions of events which i now know were very closely based on real events (nanjing massacre in 1937) but integrated with a fantasy world. i think at the very least there should be some sort of content warning for this book. definitely a salient read as a genocide is literally occurring right now.
I listened to most of this book and I think if I had read the entire physical book I would be giving this 5 stars. I read the last 100 pages and I am so glad I did because the writing is amazing. This is an epic story with an amazing main character, original story, masterful world building, and perfect pacing. I will reread this one day and I am sure I am going to give this 5 stars when I do. I didn't like the audiobook narrator though! I am looking forward to the second book.
To be transparent, this is a DNF at the 90% mark. I'm done with the misery porn and poor character development.
