I thought I was going to be reading a heartwarming coming of age story with a whodunnit mixed in, and it was that, I guess. It’s just that unfortunately, there was also A LOT of rambling detail for characters and scenes that brought absolutely no value to the story. Basically just extra reading. (This is one of my biggest pet peeves, when writers add tons of extra detail that has no actual purpose).
Perhaps my biggest dislike is that, for the most part, all of the characters and scenes in the book are 100% believable. It’s like if you took all the worst times in your childhood, wrote them down in a journal, and then bound that up and sold it as a book, that would be this story. It wasn’t entertaining for me. It was more like a sad and depressing reminder of how much life can suck, and then you die.
By the way, the bullfrog scene? WTAF? What value did that bring to this story? Hang on whilst I go out and hug the chubby bullfrogs in our pond that we hand raised from tadpoles.
