I guess I need to read a better Agatha Christie!

A very enjoyable read, like all Agatha Christie, and with some wonderful characters, although I think my reading was slightly marred by having seen a (very different) television adaptation of the story first.

This isn’t one of Christie’s best mysteries in my opinion, but being a Christie it’s still decent. I guessed the murderer pretty early on and even the how I guessed with the exception of one little thing. I didn’t get on with Emily’s character. I just don’t like women who use their “feminine wiles” to lead men on and get what they want. All the other characters were engaging and fun. But I don’t think this will ever make my reread list.

Now THIS is the kinda Agatha Christie book that got me into Agatha Christie books.

Flushed out characters, solid back stories, mind-consuming theories. And all of this incorporated seamlessly into the story without seeming like an overwhelming info dump.

In this particular installment, Christie's flow of the plotline is just PERFECT. The writing was so engaging, that this was one of the few times where finding out the real murderer wasn't my only goal in a mystery. I was truly invested in the story for what it was, and not just the final revelation. I was hooked to the book and finished it in a matter of 1-2 weekdays, but that's more because of how addicting it was rather than my usual need to get to the end.

This was a GOOD read, people. This is what you call a mystery story! There was a lot happening, and NONE of it felt like an unnecessary filler chapter. I was genuinely interested in knowing what each of the character had to say and to see what each of them brought to the table. It wasn't repetitive, it also wasn't complex.

This was quite a simple mystery tbh. In the sense, the murderer was not a complicated person trying to actively play games like in most of her books like The ABC Murders and all. No. This was one hit and run, with 0 clues. The murder doesn't make sense at all, and there's no way this murder could possibly even have happened in the first place. It was that kinda murder.

No Hercule Poirot, and no Miss Marple. And yet the story was top notch.

Ms. Emily
Inspector Narracott
Charles Enderby

These three are the characters who carried the story. Out of these three, Emily most possibly stole the show. She was a brilliant character to be reckoned with. She was everything that I wish to be in the face of chaos. Inspector Narracott had my utmost respect, for his unbiased view, his need to figure out the truth and only charge whose guilty, and his open-minded, genuine approach. I appreciate that he didn't leave a single theory unturned. Charles Enderby, was truly a genius, genius fellow. He's got tact. I daresay Charles and Emily would've made a good pair! But it is what it is.

Also, I have this petty satisfaction that I had 4 suspects, and the 2nd one turned out to be the right one. Lol.

This is an Agatha Christie, that I highly recommend!
