Book about an old artist who is obsessed with painting to a fault.
The book was funny often but I did not care for it overall. Meandering and pointless mostly.
I think it could have been a much shorter book. None of the characters were likeable. There might be some deep truths in this book that can be uncovered by thinking hard about what was going on but I was too bored to do that.

A few pages of this and a recommendation from my dad were enough to tell me that this is not my kind of story. Going in the donation box.

One of my favourite books with one of my favourite characters. I mean of all time. I've read it twice over the years and recently watched the movie. I would like to think there is a little of Gulley Jimson in all of us just waiting to get out.

This book was very hard to read. The protagonist was intentionally extremely unreliable, so I spent most of the book separating fact from fiction. There are also extensive passages of just the protagonist's thoughts to show his perspective. I put down this book multiple times because I struggled getting hooked into the book.

Very good book although it took some time to get into it. Fabulous on art and artists, excellent social commentary, memorable characters. Delighted and somewhat surprised (it shouldn't surprise) that Alec Guinness adapted the novel and played Gulley Jimson in a film, which I now want to see. I've a feeling The Horse's Mouth is not as well known and read now as it should be, a shame as I found it very modern.

I have this cover, that used to express the book for me. I used to thrust this cover at my friends: That is beauty. That is love. Find them inside, too. It's about a down-and-out artist, in his delapidated age. Humane.
