BEASTARS, Vol. 5

Paru Itagaki

I might take a break from Beastars. It's kinda gone off the rails a lil bit, and I have other manga to buy that I'm enjoying far more.

Parts of this series are really fascinating and introspective, but the focus on the weird love triangle/square between Louis/Legoshi/Haru/Juno is getting old and honestly? I get that they are teenagers and are probably experiencing a whirlwind of emotions and thoughts, but sometimes, this series takes it over the top... especially with Legoshi's dominant "You will be mine; you are my prey" attitude toward Haru in this installment. It's a bit much.. and honestly detracts from the story in the way any super possessive person would. It's obnoxious.

Other parts and characters focused on world building and informing about the tenuous relationship between herbivores and carnivores is pretty interesting and I look forward to more than I do the main character's motivations (which honestly, annoy me at this point).

Had to listen to an audio book version of this because this book was really hard to find an English copy!

Wow this volume was so action-packed and insane. Mr. Panda and Legoshi teaming up to take on the lion mafia from the black market in order to rescue Haru was pretty cool. The art for these scenes were fantastic. Itagaki's skill with illustrating Legoshi's savagery deserves all the praise. I especially love the panels where Legoshi and the mob boss are fighting to the death and we see Legoshi's thoughts. His character continues to be so compelling in my eyes. In a previous panel, he has a flashback where he's talking to Jack about why he was born a wolf and how herbivores and carnivores alike are struggling with their identities and society's perceptions of them. In the midst of battle, the gray wolf comes to the conclusion that he was born to use his brute strength and body for the protection of Haru? Others?
Either way I love this part because we're seeing Legoshi becoming more self-aware and more understanding of what it means for a carnivore to master their instincts and use it for good. I believe since the previous volume, Legoshi has concluded that his love for Haru is pure and without the instinct to feed on a helpless beast muddling his feelings.

There's another moment that I felt was overshadowed by all the action and that's the interaction with Louis and the Mayor (who is a lion dead-set on cleaning up the negative image of his ferocious kind). Louis learns that becoming a Beastar isn't just a highly-coveted status that elevates your reputation within the confines of high school but it involves overseeing dangerous matters in the adult world no teenager is prepared to face.

We also find out more about Haru's backstory and the motivation behind her promiscuity. She is prepared to meet her tragic fate and has a moment to reflect on her life and the decisions she's made. She has many regrets and laments about her insignificant existence coming to such an abrupt and terrible end. Haru continues to be a rather interesting character and I'm very excited to see how her relationship with Legoshi progresses now that this situation has brought them even closer.

Now that cliffhanger...that was criminal and cruel. Now I'm anxious, worried and intrigued!

This volume alone proves that this is one of the greatest manga series of all time.

The intensity, the emotion, the high stakes, the characterisation, EVERYTHING - There is TRULY nothing that can compare to it in my experience of reading manga.

This volume is perfect.
