These poems are hard to read but impossible to look away from. It’s amazing to read a book by an author and think “this person has more to say in 2 pages than most people do in a lifetime”. Evelyn Araluen is the voice of young Australia.

This debut poetry collection is brilliantly biting and incredibly important. Evelyn Araluen mixes poetry and essay to produce a book that bears witness to Australia’s settler-colonial past and oppressive present, but also shares hopes for a future of decolonisation, sovereignty, and reconciliation.

We should all read this.

The poem “The Inevitable Pandemic Poem” felt a bit out of place thematically but otherwise this was fantastic. Will reread.

Evelyn’s poetry is tender, fierce, fluid, and Dropbear is full of lines that shift and comfort and unsettle. This is a stunning collection.
