I really wanted to love this book. Perhaps I read it too fast or too young, however. Maybe I will revisit it another day.

"O mundo estará fodido de vez no dia em que os homens viajarem em primeira classe e a literatura no vagão de carga."

Brilliant storytelling and narration. It's clear that the author is a genius. But this is not something that I can read for enjoyment.

Most of the time, I felt like I was missing something as I read this book. Maybe I'll have to read it again now that I know how the story ends. My main takeaway is that everything is cyclical; history repeats itself, and we are not as unique and unpredictable as we think we are. To quote the book:

"I know all of this by heart," Úrsula would shout. "It's as if time has turned around and we were back at the beginning." (p. 210)

More like 2.5 stars on this one. The magical realism was great and it had some beautifully written prose, but the sum of its parts didn't work for me. It was a struggle to track who is who (a million Aurelianos and Arcadios), the pacing is pure ADHD literature and their was too much incest (by which I mean there was more than zero).

Think I would have gotten more out of it if I knew Spanish and read it in Spanish! The magical realism is amazing
