I got 50% of the way through before I gave up. I struggled to read the accented speech and it was so gosh darn boring most of the time. Not for me.

Mark Twain would love South Park. This book’s humor is so clever in the way it looks racism (slavery), alcoholism, literacy, classism straight in the face.
if you judge a book written in the 1880s by the standards of the 21st century you are a fucking imbecile. we cannot sugarcoat history for your fragile sensibilities - in doing so you dishonour the real victims of slavery and racism imo.
yes, the N word appears (literally) hundreds of times. yes, ideas about the superiority of the white race are normalised. yes, parts will make you cringe. but also: it’s 1887. it’s a genuine insight into attitudes and experiences of life in the 19th century Deep South, with some comedic relief and slapstick thrown in for good measure.
in spite of all this, mark twain DOES subtly criticise slavery and racial inequality, which - for the time - is pretty awesome of him. also i just really love huck finn

I can appreciate the value from a cultural perspective, but found the book a slog to read.
It was a good book to read with my 10-year-old. It had fun adventure and great topics for conversation.

American Literature at it's finest! I've never actually read this entire novel until now and I'm glad I did. This is a classic tale of adventure, morality, the human conscious, & good ol' fashion rascalism!
Moderate: Child abuse, Racial slurs, Racism, Slavery, Classism
Minor: Confinement, Death, Physical abuse, Death of parent
