Had trouble connecting to the characters until about halfway through. Tone was naive/optimistic for much of it which did not feel realistic. Still, I appreciated learning about these women’s plight which is clearly underrecognized. Just wasn’t as cohesive as Morris’s Tattooist of Auschwitz books.

This was an amazing story about survival and a story a lot of people don’t know from WWII. The Japanese had their own prisoners of war and how these Australian nurses were shipwrecked and kept as prisoners, fighting to survive in a climate that was as dangerous as their guards is so moving and extraordinary.
Reasons I Recommend:
1) Sisters in blood and in heart stick together to try to take control over what little power they have over their own lives
2) Internees and not POWs and how that was reflected in their treatment and
3) The use of music as an attempt to keep up spirits was heartwarming.
