This was an incredible book about the strength women have, not only alone, but even more so together. The Japanese occupation of Singapore was not a branch of WWII that I had delved into before and learning about it through these women's eyes was heartbreaking. The lengths to which the women were starved and abused was utterly inhumane. I admired their resiliency and the friendships that were formed during such a difficult time.

My only issue was that some of the dialogue felt almost nonchalant at times which was very unrealistic, as who would be nonchalant about being captured and abused? I can admire optimism in the toughest of times, but the dialogue lacked vulnerability during such a horrendous time in these women's lives.

However all in all, an incredible story of bravery, resilience, and friendship.

Jag har tyckt mycket om de tidigare böckerna av Morris om andra världskriget och förintelsen, men denna tycker jag föll lite platt. Idén är bra och har potential, men boken är i för dialogdriven och karaktärerna är för idealistiska för att det ska bli rolig läsning. Alla karaktärer är helt självuppoffrande hela tiden, dialogen känns onaturlig, alla konflikter löses snabbt och man får väldigt lite insikt i karaktärernas känslor och tankar. Synd, för det hade kunnat bli en fin läsning om mer fokus lades vid det outtalade.

I cried a lot in this but it wasn’t graphic at all. I mostly cried at the music, it was so beautiful! The audiobook is read by Edith from downton abbey and she was a perfect choice.
