So dense and so smart.
So glad I own it.
Just beginning.

An important read for white folks — Toni dives into literary criticism that explores the framing of the American literature canon and exposes its roots in racism. For me, not new information, but for readers who prefer “traditional novels” it’s a great way to question and unlearn how they have been shaped, exploring a few classics, and how Black people show up.
Black folks who have already diversified your library, it’s likely nothing new, but it’s affirming what we know.

I’ll never look at any piece of American literature the same way again. As urgent and necessary a read today, 25 years after publication.
I think I fell asleep like four times but it was really good, I'm just tired
Rounded up from 4&1/2. I am in awe of the authority TM has in intellectual criticism of race in American literature. Though it could use a few more comprehensive examples (if only for more master-class writing), it's a quick, must read.
