Really only liked a couple of essays from the collection: the intro was good, peculiar benefits was also good,  how we all lose was ok, spectacle of broken men was good, the illusion of safety was good

I feel that younger me would of appreciated this. I wish I had read this a few years ago when I was first starting to explore feminist writing, It lays down the foundations and some nuance to the each topic that is explored. I would definitely recommend this book to people just starting out in reading feminist nonfiction as the writing is accessible, and explores a variety of topics from education to the music industry.
I went into this thinking it was going to be more statistical based but was more so Gay's personal journey with being a feminist while drawing on feminist research and global events To begin with I was not so sure on the writing style but  I think maybe some of the earlier essay's were just weaker than some of the later essay's in the book. I did really enjoy how Gay talked about literature and other forms of the media throughout the book, It's left me with lots of good recommendations to read or watch and added a critical lens to media I've already consumed.

There were some parts I had to skip past bc Gay was talking about books/media that I haven't seen so they weren't interesting to me.

Gay's essay collection is a good reminder of the sorts of things one should care about as a feminist and an ally to marginalized groups. There were things I wanted from the book that it didn't necessarily give me, like a clearer through line and more memior-type writings, but that is not the book that she set out to write, so I can't blame her.

i really liked gay's candor, pacing, and sense of humor. this book put topics and ideas ive been learning about for years and shed new light on them. i felt like this book was maybe written for older, third wave feminists, because i didn't feel like I was introduced to any new ideas through her essays, but it was wonderful to hear her takes on pop culture and the idea behind being a bad feminist was such a realistic one.
