Can't believe it took nearly the whole book to figure out plot! I found this an incredibly complex, confusing storyline, requiring lots of concentration/ note takingš¬. Despite this, I found the character development quite strong and was able to make connections with MMC and others. Would have loved a glossary in this book! The end was excellent, fast paced, emotional and satisfying, leaving some great teasers for next instalment (which I will read)

A Grim Dark Forest Fantasy!
Gods of the Wyrdwood is the first book of the Forsaken trilogy and introduces us quickly to the ( in my eyes) main character - the forest. The entire setting is very grim and the characters are all too. The story kicks off with a multi-unit family. Meaning there are several dads and mothers, being called first-father and third-mother. We meet one of the kids named Cahan and his sister Nahac. There seem to be several family clans that besides wearing clan paint and specific colors, fall under certain gods. There is a lot of world building at play here, making me believe that this is to set us readers up for more plot in book 2 and 3. This isn't your general intro to fantasy novel, you will find yourself a little lost in the sauce in the beginning and have to continue reading to get to the plot. By the time you near the ending, you will have a clear understanding of the "world" and the dynamics and it switches into a more plot driven narrative.
Cahan is the kind of character is my kind of MC, I enjoy his grim and subdued nature. If you're like me and actually like immersive world building before the actions start, this is a definite must read. I was intending to read book 1 and 2 in anticipation for book 3 - and the way the story planted its roots in me.. I am glad I have two more books ahead of me to explore!
Greatly immersive and wonderfully grim fantasy fiction!
