The Inheritance by Louisa May Alcott – I love Edith almost as much as I love Jo March! And that is saying something! Happy Reading!

I saw the movie version of this novel on tv in the 90s and love it. I finally got around to reading it and having no memory of the details of the movie I found it a fun and quick read. It is impressive that she wrote this at 17. Edith is the heart of sincerity, loyalty, and truth. I rewatched the movie this afternoon and it has many differences but I really enjoyed it also.

Quick read. Sorry I'm being so mean to your book you wrote at 17 and never meant to be seen by another person, Alcott. Feels weird to sneer "DERIVATIVE" at baby's first novella but, it is. Hits all the Victorian Melodrama points with no real edge. You can predict the ending on the first page.

A fan of Little Women, the book and all the movies, it was easy for me to imagine 17 year old Louisa May Alcott writing this gothic romance novel. The language is flowery, the reactions over the top, the ending predictable. It was a short fun read.

Honestly, I just picked this book up because Louisa M. Alcott is one of my favourite authors. It wasn't a bad book, and it wasn't a particularly good book either.
It was written by Alcott when she was just 17, and shows how influenced she was by the gothic and sentimental novels of her day. It was a short, easy read - but it wasn't the Alcott that I know and love.

Louisa May Alcott's first novel: where nobody suspects that a character named "Edith" might be English instead of Italian, the antagonists are bitter and selfish, and the protagonists are filled with a holy light of selflessness and purity of spirit. Made me want to frame someone for theft myself.
