Very interesting mix. It reminded me of the old cyberpunk RPG with the magic and elves.

i loved this! it's a really good start to a series and it held my attention from the minute i picked it up. if it weren't for my school work i'd have finished it much faster, but alas.

my only issue with this book had to do with it being slightly confusing at some points. i had a hard time keeping up with all of the information and remembering what was what and during some of the action scenes it was hard to picture what exactly was happening. it's not a major issue, but it's something to note!

i love the characters and i am very interested in where the next installments will take this story!

Kate Daniels is a mercenary with a mouth as sharp as her sword. She lives in a world where magic and technology cannot co-exist. When magic is running rampant, almost all technology shuts down until it draws back. The city of Atlanta is falling apart. Buildings have collapsed from the constant struggle between magic and technology. And something is stalking the streets killing shapechangers and vampires, bringing the city close to an all-out war between the two groups of supernatural creatures. That same something killed Kate's guardian, and now she is on the hunt for whoever, or whatever killed him.

Kate might be small, but don't mistake her for being weak. She will challenge anyone who gets in her way to finding the truth. Of course, she doesn't always think before she speaks, and it can put her in some precarious situations. Especially with Curran, Lord of the shapeshifters. Being the alpha means no challenge can go without being met, and Kate doesn't hesitate to mouth off to him.

While Kate tries to navigate pack politics, she'll have to also deal with The People. Necromancers who pilot vampires. In this series, vampires are not walking around talking and charming the pants off unsuspecting mortals. They are nothing more than blood-sucking shells that must be controlled by a necromancer, or else be reduced to a blood-lusting rage. I enjoyed the creep factor brought in by the vampires, almost the polar opposite to any other urban fantasy series.

I read this series when it first came out, and never got around to finishing it. This time, I'm committed to the end. I can't wait to see how the series develops and what else this world holds.

I loved this urban fantasy novel, the first in a series featuring Kate Daniels and set in an Atlanta of the future where waves of magic overcome technology periodically. The worldbuilding is excellent, and while Kate is gritty and tough like the typical urban fantasy heroine, Andrews' deft hand with characterization makes her real, fascinating and not a cliche.

DNF @ 50ish%. Likely, that's just when it starts to get good.

This book sits just outside of my tastes. I know why the amazing Hollis and Micky like them, though. I knew from the first few pages that Andrews was a talented author. It was clever (who comes up with this stuff!). It was just those long descriptive paragraphs, honestly it was page after page of it. I just didn't know why I was continuing, except to please those ladies. I'm so sorry gals, it's me, not you(s).

In my defence, I've been knee-deep reading scientific research lately, not to mention I just had one of the best reading experiences of my life over the last week. I'm in recovery. I need comfort.

I have my favourite fantasy worlds. It's actually not a favourite genre at all, it's the friendships and romances that I'm sniffing out. They can be worth it, which is also why I gave this a red hot go. Can't win them all.

reread update: not a fan of this audiobook narrator at all, but I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed early-days/merc Kate. This also reminded me that Ilona Andrews love to have first person narrators sit on information, which bothered me in some of the newer Hidden Legacy books. Interested to see if this was just a thing I missed in previous books or what.

I probably started this book a half-dozen times before I pushed through an d made it far enough that I was interested enough to keep reading without making myself. That said, even once I finished the book, I was still super confused by everything, including but not limited to the world, the characters, what was happening in the first book... You get the idea. So this is definitely not anywhere close to as much my thing as The Hidden Legacy is, but I'm hoping if I read a couple more books I'll start to get it and will enjoy it more.

It's been a while since I've read an urban fantasy I've liked this much. The setting is interesting, the romance is barely introduced here, but has fun sparks and bickering, the H and h both can carry their own and there are enough hints about an overarching big-bad and Kat's mysterious true identity that I almost immediately picked up the next books in the series.

Counting this as a book that's been on my TBR for way too long for the 2017 Pop Sugar Reading Challenge as I've had it on my GR to-read list since 11/2009 and just finally got around to reading it.

I really like Kate. Not too hard but not a fool either. I've read other reviews that stated that it was hard to get into and it felt like you were dropped in mid-series. I didn't have a problem. Really enjoyable read.
