This book is more of a tool for new historians that is substantiated with specific histories rather than a blunt collection of historical accounts. The amply provided context of historiographical choices made it an accessible entry point for anyone first encountering the subject and interested in researching queer histories. As someone with a background in writing about queer identities through history, I still found this book an enjoyable and informative read, and I felt comforted by the evident care with which Heyam approached their tackling of the vastly diverse identities, experiences, and backgrounds of genderqueer folks across time and place.

I liked the section about the prisoners of war and the overall thinking that people in history who are assumed to be cis or "crossdressers" had much more complex understandings of gender/sex/sexuality than we give them credit for. I also like the emphasis on fluidity.
