The beauty in this book comes directly from Julia Child herself. Her passion for France, cooking, her family and friends, all comes pouring out of the pages and you can't help but be swept up by her enthusiasm. I enjoyed most of all hearing her voice as she described the events of her life that led to and were part of her remarkable journey.

I really wanted to love this but it really dragged for me. Maybe I should have tried reading it instead of listening to the audiobook??? Def a struggle for me to get through unfortunately.

What a delightful book. Julia just seems like a wonderful person (with an equally wonderful husband. Keep food handy, this book will make you hungry. Julia seems like she could be a real friend.

I read this book as a way to enter back into normal life in the US, after my recent trip to Paris. I have been in withdrawal, missing the wonderful food and the French people. Reading about Julia Child’s encounters with France, in the late 1940s through the 1990s, was just what I needed! This book, dictated to her grand nephew, shows Child’s personality and chronicles her love affair both with France (La belle France, she calls it) and with her husband, Paul Child. The word “indomitable” comes to mind, when reading about Julia’s determination to bring French cooking to Americans. She buckles down, determined to learn every aspect of the French culinary arts and carefully translate them into terms and processes that American cooks can replicate.

The descriptions of France, just a few years after the end of WWII, are fascinating.

Ah, la belle France…
